What is wrong

On certain motorcycles, the fuel pump flange could crack. If this happens, fuel could leak while the engine is running. Note: This recall only affects motorcycles that did not have the fuel pump replaced under Transport Canada recall 2013-442.

A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire.

What the dealer will do

BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your motorcycle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump and auxiliary fuel pump (if equipped) with an improved version.

What is wrong

Certain motorcycles with dealer installed accessory turn signals may not comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CVMSS) 108 - Lighting System and Retroreflective Devices. The size of the lens on the accessory turn signals may be too small, and therefore would not meet the requirements of the standard. This could reduce vehicle conspicuity to following and approaching road users, and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will replace the accessory turn signals with factory indicators that meet the requirements of the standard.

What is wrong

On certain motorcycles, the threaded holes on the rear wheel flange could crack if the wheel bolts are tightened beyond the specified torque limit during servicing. Over time, this could allow the bolts to back out of their threaded holes, causing the rear wheel to become loose. This could result in a loss of stability of the motorcycle, and increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will replace the aluminum rear wheel flange with a steel flange.

What is wrong

On certain motorcycles, cracks could develop in the fuel pump and/or auxiliary fuel pump flange (if equipped). This would result in fuel leaking when the engine is turned on and the fuel system is pressurized. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will inspect the fuel pump flange(s) and install a reinforcing ring or replace the fuel pump(s), as necessary.

What is wrong

On certain motorcycles, if the hand protector is twisted out of position relative to the handlebar lever, to the extent that lever and protector come into contact, there is a possibility that the handlebar lever remain continuously in the partly operated position. This is turn can cause problems with the brake function and could increase the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

Owners will receive a loose-leaf insert as an addendum to the Rider's Manual and two stickers complete with the installation instructions, or owners may have their authorised BMW motorcycle dealers do the installations for them.

What is wrong

On certain motorcycles, the fuel tank mounting fasteners can work loose, allowing the bolts to slip toward the inboard side and contact the fork leg if the handlebar is turned a significant amount. This could limit handlebar travel range, affecting handling and maneuverability of the motorcycle, which could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death.

Dealers will inspect and tighten the fuel tank mounting bolts as per specifications.

What is wrong

Certain motorcycles fail to comply with the requirements of CMVSS 108 - Lamps, Reflective Devices and Associated Equipment. The front turn signals were installed in an improper location. As a result, the rider's intentions to turn may not be conveyed clearly to other road users, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury or death.

Dealers will replace the turn signal base.

What is wrong

On certain motorcycles equipped with cross-spoke wheels and the optional tire-pressure monitoring system (TPM), the hole though which the tire inflation valve (and in this case, the integral TPM sensor) is inserted was not manufactured according to specifications. Because of this, the valve may not seat properly in the hole, and a leak may develop. In some cases, it is possible that sudden deflation of the tire could occur. If this happened, motorcycle handling and control would be compromised, increasing the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will temporarily deactivate the TPM system, remove the corresponding valves and integral TPM sensors, and then replace them with standard valves. When a permanent repair is available, owners will be notified to bring their vehicle in for reactivation of the TPM system and replacement of the integral TPM sensors and valves.

What is wrong

Certain motorcycles may exhibit a temporary loss of ABS function as a result of an "overpressure" effect in the brake system caused by applying significant force to the brake lever under rapid, repeated and unusually harsh braking. Loss of ABS function can increase the risk of a crash in certain traffic and road conditions.

Dealers will install a banjo bolt with a flow restrictor to the front brake line.

What is wrong

Certain motorcycles may have an incorrectly routed front Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) sensor cable. If certain service procedures are performed, for example, a front tire change which involves removal of the front left brake caliper, it is possible for the ABS sensor cable to be routed incorrectly when the caliper is reinstalled. If this happens, the sensor cable can come into contact with, and rub/chafe against, the front brake disk. Over time, if the chafing becomes severe, it is possible to lose the ABS function.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will attach additional retaining clips to the ABS sensor cable.

Certain motorcycles may suffer clutch assembly failure while being ridden. Parts of the clutch could work loose resulting in clutch fragments/debris being thrown like projectiles through the engine block. As a result, the rider may receive serious injuries or death.
