Recalls

Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

Engine

Transport Canada recall 2011147

1 April 2011

Transport Canada lists: ML Class 2000–2004

What is wrong

On certain 2000-2004 ML55 AMG and 2000-2002 ML-Class vehicles, the cruise control may fail to disengage if the plunger within the brake lamp switch become immovable. The driver would, however, be able to disengage the cruise control by other means such as; pushing the cruise control stalk towards the instrument cluster, or by applying adequate amount of brake pedal force to achieve a specified deceleration rate. Failure or delay in disengaging the cruise control can increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will replace the brake lamp switch.

Steering

Transport Canada recall 2008362

2 October 2008

Transport Canada lists: ML Class 1998–2004

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the hose clamp used to secure the power steering fluid cooling hose to the power steering cooler may not provide sufficient clamping force for this connection. The loss of power steering fluid may result in diminished power steering over time and may ultimately damage the power steering pump.

What the dealer will do

Dealer will replace the power steering cooler hose and clamp.

Source: Transport Canada — Vehicle Recalls Database; NRCan — Fuel consumption ratings. Data current as of 6 August 2026. Running cost uses Ontario average prices (155 ¢/L, 14.5 ¢/kWh), which are hand-maintained estimates. These are average residential rates. A car’s charging is added on top of what your home already uses, so on a tiered, time-of-use or subsidised tariff it is billed at your top rate rather than this average — which makes the real cost higher, especially in the territories.
