What is wrong

On certain vehicles, the tell-tale (warning light) for the antilock brake system (ABS) doesn't light up in the instrument cluster when you start the vehicle. Canadian regulations require the ABS tell-tale to turn on during the start-up sequence to tell you that the ABS is working. Note: The braking system will continue to work normally, and the ABS tell-tale will turn on when there is a problem with the ABS.

Why it matters

If the ABS tell-tale does not turn on during start-up, you may not know if the ABS is working correctly. A problem with the ABS will cause a warning message to appear on the vehicle's central information display screen, even if the ABS tell-tail fails.

What the dealer will do

BMW will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer update the vehicle software.

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, a crankshaft sensor error may cause the engine to stall. This would result in a loss of motive power, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will replace the crankshaft sensor. Note: This condition would result in the illumination of the check engine warning lamp and an “engine malfunction” message appearing in the instrument cluster. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2018-373.

What is wrong

Certain vehicles may not comply with Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 101 – Location and Identification of Controls and Displays. Due to a software error, the instrument cluster may not turn on when the vehicle is started. This could disable various control telltales and warning symbols, thereby failing to meet the requirements of the standard. This could also result in the driver not being aware of malfunctions, which could affect vehicle performance and increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property.

Dealers will update the vehicle software.
