Biggest effect · you can act on this
At-fault claims and convictions dominate everything else. A single at-fault claim can move a premium more than changing vehicle entirely.
Auto insurance
Your vehicle matters less than most people assume, and three other things matter more. Here is what moves the number, and what your province’s system lets you do about it.
Private market
Private market with few insurers active; a broker is usually the practical route.
Ranked by how much each typically matters, and marked by whether you can do anything about it.

At-fault claims and convictions dominate everything else. A single at-fault claim can move a premium more than changing vehicle entirely.
Biggest effect · fixed
Rated by postal code, on local claim frequency, theft rates and repair costs. The gap between a dense urban code and a rural one in the same province can be very large.
Large effect · you can act on this
Years of continuous, claim-free licensing. Newcomers to Canada can often have foreign driving experience recognised with a letter of experience from their previous insurer — this is the single most commonly missed discount.
Moderate effect · you can act on this
Rated on claims history for that make and model: repair cost, parts availability, theft attractiveness and injury outcomes. This is why two cars of the same value can differ substantially.
Moderate effect · you can act on this
Annual distance and whether the vehicle is used to commute. Both are asked, and both are rated.
Moderate effect · you can act on this
Collision and comprehensive coverage, and the deductible on each. Dropping collision on an old vehicle whose value is below the deductible plus premium is a real saving.
Smaller effect · you can act on this
Home-and-auto bundles, winter tyres (a legislated discount in Ontario), telematics programmes, and group rates through an employer or alumni association.
Vehicle is the fourth factor, not the first. What we can tell you about yours from government data:
Most newcomers are quoted as though they have never driven. A letter of experience from your previous insurer, stating how many years you were insured and claim-free, will usually be recognised — and it is the largest single discount available to a new arrival. Ask your old insurer for it before you cancel the policy; getting one afterwards is much harder.
