Recalls

Good news: Recall repairs are almost always free. Book with any manufacturer dealer and quote the recall number. Transport Canada’s own wording is that a manufacturer “will almost always make these repairs free of charge”, so being asked to pay for recall work is unusual and worth questioning. Since 2018 the Minister of Transport can order a company to pay for repairs so owners do not bear the cost.

Transport Canada recall 2021740 · manufacturer campaign 90S9

9 December 2021

Transport Canada lists: Q5 2018–2022 · SQ5 2018–2022

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, if you spill liquid on the rear seat, or drive through heavy rain or deep water, the gateway control module could be damaged. If this happens, the vehicle may enter emergency mode and suddenly lose power to the wheels. Note: The power steering and braking systems will continue to work. You may also see warning messages on the instrument panel when this happens.

Why it matters

A sudden loss of power to the wheels may increase the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a protective cover on the gateway control module and seal an underbody seam, as necessary.

8 April 2019

Transport Canada lists: Q5 2018–2019 · SQ5 2018–2019

What is wrong

Some vehicles were built with an incorrect brake master cylinder. The master cylinder may be too short, which could cause it to fail. This could cause a complete loss of braking (with the exception of the emergency/parking brake function).

Why it matters

A loss of brakes can create the risk of a crash.

What the dealer will do

Volkswagen will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the brake master cylinder. If your vehicle is equipped with the incorrect part, it will be replaced with the correct one.

1 June 2018

Transport Canada lists: Q5 2018 · SQ5 2018 · Atlas 2018 · Beetle 2018 · and 3 more

What is wrong

On certain vehicles, a problem with the brake system may cause gas bubbles to form in the brake fluid. This could cause a soft brake pedal feel and a reduction in brake performance, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property.

What the dealer will do

Dealers will bleed the front or rear brakes as necessary. Note: In the interim, owners are advised to stop driving their vehicle until the defect has been repaired. Affected owners should call Volkswagen's Roadside Assistance number at 1-800-411-6688.

Running cost uses Ontario average prices (155 ¢/L, 14.5 ¢/kWh), which are hand-maintained estimates. These are average residential rates. A car’s charging is added on top of what your home already uses, so on a tiered, time-of-use or subsidised tariff it is billed at your top rate rather than this average — which makes the real cost higher, especially in the territories.
